As part of Electrical Fire Safety Week 2025, the Electrical Safety Roundtable (ESR) is supporting Electrical Safety First in its campaign to reduce the number of accidental electrical fires in homes.
This year’s focus is on the fire risks of white goods, everyday appliances that can pose hidden dangers. According to data from the Home Office, last year, there were more than 1,000 accidental electrical fires involving everyday household white goods like tumble dryers and washing machines across England.
On average, that’s three fires involving white goods every day. The key messages in this campaign can help reduce the number of accidental electrical fires in homes and keep families safe while using white goods.
It’s important that households have registered their appliances to stay informed about recalls so manufacturers can reach out if it turns out the item is somehow faulty or dangerous.
Householders should avoid plugging large appliances into an extension lead, as it may become overloaded and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for appliance cleaning and maintenance.
Chair of the ESR Home group, Nick Hayler said: “This Electrical Fire Safety Week 2025 it is essential that we highlight electrical safety in the home, and we raise awareness on how the dangers in homes aren’t always obvious.
The importance of sharing this crucial message and preventing electrical fires involving common household white goods cannot be underestimated."
