The number of electric vehicles on our roads is steadily increasing but it can be a confusing time for consumers wanting to know about the cheapest tariff or what to look out for when thinking about getting an electric vehicle chargepoint (EVCP) installed at home.
It is often quicker and cheaper to charge EVs at home if there is access to off-street parking but there are many things to think about when getting an EVCP installed to ensure a smooth and safe installation.
The Electrical Safety in the Home Group, a cross-industry forum which aims to promote electrical safety in the home, has launched new guidance on World Electric Vehicle Day, celebrated annually on September 9th, to help consumers ask the right questions.
Crucially, householders must find a registered and competent installer who is qualified to install the chargepoint, do thorough research and know the right questions to ask to have confidence in their EVCP installation.
A qualified electrician will need to consider a few key issues to check whether you can have an EV chargepoint at home such as whether it is safe to add an EV to the demands on your electricity supply.
The guidance covers some of the things that consumers need to consider.
The Electrical Safety Roundtable’s Chair of the Electrical Safety in the Home group, Chris Pack commented: “World EV Day is a good opportunity to promote the benefits of electric vehicles, but it can be confusing for consumers with so much information to take on board. The Electrical Safety in the Home group has created this guide to highlight what consumers should be aware of when getting a domestic EVCP installed.
“Most people won’t have had a charge point installed before so won’t know what to look out for and what questions to ask. We hope this guidance will help consumers ensure they have a safe and quality installation.”
